Some products look so good and work so well that you'll want to come up with a reason to get one even if you don't actually need it. The Brother PT-2430PC ($80 street) is that kind of product.

The PT-2430PC is a label printer, but not the kind that prints mailing labels, folder labels, or anything else on paper. It prints on what you probably think of as plastic labels, although (depending on the printer) the labels may actually be plastic or nylon. They come in sizes ranging from 9/64 inch (for the edge of a jewel case) to 1 inch wide. More rugged and more waterproof than paper, they're far more suitable for applications like labeling a computer cable to identify what it's plugged into, labeling your stapler so it doesn't wander too far from your desk, and even for labels to use outdoors, where the waterproof feature is essential.
Brother has a long history with printing this kind of label, although most Brother models aren't designed to connect to a PC. Instead, most work as self-contained labeling systems, complete with their own built-in keyboards and one- to three-line monochrome LCDs. Using one is much like typing a document on a typewriter, without the added flexibility you get from PC-based software. The PT-2430PC leaves the keyboard and LCD out, and connects to a PC, giving it the obvious advantage of letting you use the PC's keyboard and screen to design your label before giving the print command.
Setting up the printer is easy. The PT-2430PC is smaller than a typical paper-label printer, at 4.4 by 2.6 by 7.4 inches (HWD), and it weighs just 1.3 pounds. In fact, although it fits nicely on a desk, it's small enough to be easy to use as a portable unit, carried from desk to desk or location to location. It can even run on six AAA batteries, although it comes with a power adapter. To install the PT-2430PC, you simply snap in the label cartridge that comes with the unit, insert batteries (which aren't included) or plug in the power adapter, and connect to a computer with the supplied USB cable. That's (potentially) all there is to it. You don't even need to install software.

The printer includes the program P-touch Editor Lite stored in internal memory that looks to Windows (2000, XP, or Vista) like a removable drive. When you plug in the USB cable and turn the printer on, a window pops up (if you're using XP or Vista, anyway) giving you the option to run the program. In Windows Explorer, the program shows up as if it were a removable drive; just double-click to run it.
The built-in program offers reasonably capable editing and formatting features, including the ability to change font and font size, add frames and graphics, and control the length of the label. More precisely, you can either specify a length for a given label or set the program to automatically adjust the length to allow room for whatever text and graphics you add to the label. By default, the software uses the printer's automatic cutter to cut individual labels from the roll—a particularly nice extra. You can also turn the feature off if you like, and cut the labels manually later.
The built-in software enhances the printer's portability tremendously, since it means you don't have to install software on all—or any—of the computers you want to use it with. That said, it's still a light version, lacking some important features, most notably the ability to print bar codes. The printer also comes with a full version of P-touch Editor 5.0 on disc. Install it and you add the ability to print bar codes along with some extras like more types of frames to choose from. In addition, the full version offers what I consider a somewhat easier-to-use interface.
There's also one other difference between the two software choices. The printer was slightly, but consistently, faster in my tests with the full version of the program. I timed a 2-inch text label, for example, at 13.4 seconds using the built-in software, compared with 12.7 seconds using the full version.

In most cases, the difference between the two programs is hardly enough to notice. More important is that printing with either program takes about twice as long as I timed for plastic label printing with the DYMO LabelWriter Duo . Keep in mind, however, that the two printers aren't direct competitors. The LabelWriter Duo is more expensive, it combines a plastic-label printer with a paper-label printer in one unit, and it isn't meant to be portable.

Brother offers a choice of 66 label cartridges for the PT-2430PC. As already mentioned, the widths range from 9/64 inch to 1 inch. Colors include black printed on white, clear, red, yellow, blue, green, or fluorescent orange; white on clear, black, or blue; red on white; and gold on black. Prices range from $15 to $20 (street) per cartridge, with a tape length for most cartridges of 26.2 feet.

Note, too, that along with the PT-2430PC, Brother offers the PT-1230PC ($50 street), a slightly smaller model with most of the same features, but without an automatic cutter or power adapter and limited to cartridge widths of up to 0.5 inch. According to Brother, the PT-1230PC uses the same software as the PT-2430PC, including both the built-in Lite version and the full version. It doesn't come with a disc, however. To get the full version, you have to download it.

After working with the Brother PT-2430PC, I'm left thinking about all the things around my house and office that don't really need labels, but might benefit from them anyway. Ideally, I'd like the printer to be faster, but it isn't slow enough for speed to be a problem. If you need the kind of labels it prints, and especially if you need to print them at different locations, like home and office, or different offices in the same building, the PT-2430 is easy to recommend. Quite simply, it's a capable tool that does what it promises.
